Cox Arena Getting Name Change

Posted: Updated:

The Cox Arena at San Diego State University will be renamed Viejas Arena under a 10-year naming rights agreement announced today.

The naming rights agreement with the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians goes into effect July 1 and will pay the university about $6 million over the next 10 years, according to SDSU.

"We're very pleased that the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, who are such an important member of the San Diego community, has decided to partner with us," SDSU President Stephen Weber said in a statement.

"SDSU's arena is one of the top sports and entertainment venues in San Diego County," he said. "We believe Viejas will help add to the arena's success into the future."

The more than 12,000-seat venue opened in 1997 as Cox Arena. Cox Communications paid SDSU more than $5 million over the 12-year life of the previous naming rights agreement, which expires on June 30, according to the university.

As part of the agreement, the word "casino" can't be used in association with the arena.
