The Elegant Truffle on Scott Street in Point Loma may look like a humble, unassuming chocolate shop, but it is actually the laboratory of Jennifer Marie Muratore.
"I'm a mad scientist. I just play all day," she said.
Experimenting in the kitchen came natural to Jen.
"I baked my first chocolate cake from scratch when I was 5 and a half," she said.
After 33 years as a CPA, she traded her pocket protector for her great grandma's copper kettle.
"I use the same pot she did in France in 1847," Jennifer said.
She uses the pot to stir up great-great grandma's original, a potent and addictive batch of French butter caramel. To make it even more decadent, she dips her caramel in Belgian chocolate.
"I'm evil, but I like being evil in that respect," Jennifer said.
As you'd expect, at the Elegant Truffle there's a wide array of truffles. But if you're ready to ascend to a new level of chocolate euphoria, try the Oh My God Cake.
"We've got an Oreo cookie crust, and then we've got a whipped mousse cheesecake... a blend of three chocolates and we have truffled ganache on top," Jennifer said.
Other labors of Jen's laboratory include the Wow Cake.
"It's a blend of four chocolates, espresso and butter and all sorts of good things," she said.
The Elegant Truffle features fudge brownies with macadamia nuts and almond bark, soft toffee and if you have the desire to be wired, there's espresso kisses.
"Each kiss has five espresso beans," Jennifer explained.
In this creative kitchen, a mad scientist has concocted the lethal recipe for death by chocolate.
