A series of robberies and assaults along El Cajon Boulevard has people in the neighborhood on edge. One man emailed the News 8 CrimeFighters to report a mugging that seriously injured the victim.
El Cajon Boulevard in the Talmadge neighborhood of East San Diego already has a reputation for high crime. Now residents are noticing an increase in robberies and muggings. One man emailed the News 8 CrimeFighters saying:
"My friend was robbed and beaten with a baseball bat and left bleeding in the street near 50th and El Cajon Blvd. there is a rash of attacks going on."
Other people who live in the area blame drug use, especially at night.
"Probably with the recession and that gas station, a lot of traffic and these little flea bag hotels and stuff... an element for crime really," a resident said.
The News 8 CrimeFighters ran the numbers for police reports in Talmadge over the past month within a half-mile radius of El Cajon Boulevard and 50th Street. Our Crimetracker map shows 13 robberies and 6 assaults, all within the past 30 days. Most of the crime is clustered along El Cajon Boulevard.
Neighbors say they don't feel safe at night, and they're taking matters into their own hands.
"I have my pepper spray, I have my gun. I have what I need. Nobody bothers me and I don't bother nobody," a resident said.
