San Diego's hero marathon man

Posted: Updated:

He is the first American since 1982 to win the New York City Marathon. Meb Keflezighi is from San Diego, graduating from San Diego High.

In the final steps of his historic run in New York City Sunday, San Diego's hero marathon man Meb Keflezighi knew his story was stirring. The 34-year-old who battled a bad hip injury wanted the world to know he was back.

"It's beautiful when it pays off, the 100 miles a week to get it done," Meb said.

Two of Meb's sisters watched his win over the internet here in San Diego.

"I think he's amazing. He's a role model to me and to a lot of others out there," sister Fnann Keflezighi said.

"We are very excited and really happy for him. It was really special because it was right after a really serious injury," Adhanet Keflezighi said.

Eduardo Ramos coached Meb from 1990 through 1994 on San Diego High School's track team. He says Meb, who was responsible for many state and local awards, is a true champion.

"I told him 'Enjoy the moment, we're proud of you and continued success," Ramos said.

The father of two says he hopes his big win will get San Diegans thinking about a healthier lifestyle.

"I would hope to be an inspiration to get people involved with fitness and exercise. It's a very therapeutic way to release stress," Meb said.

Speaking of relieving stress, Meb can now relax with a $200,000 payday that came with his win in the Big Apple.

Meb beat out nearly 44,000 runners in Sunday's marathon.
