Along Sunrise Highway

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Wispy clouds lazily sail with pale blue sky. A prevailing offshore flow ripples through the autumn-tinged oaks. A hawk plays the wind while a woodpecker taps the time. It's another "nothing much" day along Sunrise Highway.

No appointments to be kept, no arrangements to be made. For two hikers from San Marcos, a 15-mile trek through Mt. Laguna is a weekly ritual.

"We didn't meet anybody the whole 15 miles. That's the good news, that's what we're looking for," one hiker said.

The silence is almost deafening.

"We heard a lot of birds, blue jays, a few crows," a hiker said.

And on a languid sunsplashed weekday, the peace and serenity seem unparalleled.

"Oh it's ideal. It's awesome. It's a nice time of year to do it,"

As you snake your way into the higher elevations, every turn in the two-lane reveals another pine-filled Kodak moment with vistas that stretch from the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Salton Sea and beyond. It's enough to attract a couple of tourists from Switzerland.

Their love of the Sunrise Highway's natural beauty knows no language barrier.

"It's awesome," a hiker said.

They are also crazy about our prime time climate.

"We're enjoying the hot weather, because back in Switzerland it's already wintertime," the hiker said.

The Sunrise Highway is a San Diego amenity that changes with seasons, yet is still unbeatable anytime of year. So after spending an idyllic day nestled in the tranquil bosom of Mt. Laguna, what's next on the agenda?

"Las Vegas," the hiker said.

What happens along Sunrise Highway, stays along Sunrise Highway.
