Supporters of same-sex marriage hold rally on anniversary of Prop 8 passage

Posted: Updated:

Supporters of same-sex marriage took to the streets of San Diego Wednesday night on the one-year anniversary of the passing of Proposition 8.  Their march also falls the day after Maine voters rejected same-sex marriage in a similar vote.

Gay couples say the issue is about equal rights, but opponents say the voters have spoken.  The vote in Maine is a setback for one local couple who still hopes to change Prop 8 in California.  Chris Close-Rodriguez told News 8, "Our community is gonna come together.  We are a united community and we are going to fight to get this overturned as soon as possible."

In response to recent rallies and the vote in Maine, the National Organization for Marriage issued this statement, "If they can't win there, it really does tell you the majority of Americans are not on board with this gay marriage thing."

Same-sex marriage activists must decide when the best time will be to put Proposition 8 back on the ballot in California.  Some people at Wednesday's march in San Diego were pushing for as early as next year.  In order to put it back on the ballot for the 2010 election, supporters will need to gather 1-million signatures in the state by April.

Some backers of same-sex marriage are hoping to wait until 2012, to give them more time to raise money and support.
