SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - SDSU Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel has resigned after a scandal involving the misuse of school money to pay for an alleged affair.
Schemmel allegedly had an affair with a woman from Alabama. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the woman and her husband are now going through a divorce and the man accused his wife of having an affair with Schemmel as part of the court proceedings. The husband’s attorneys then subpoenaed Schemmel’s travel expenses, which may have uncovered some questionable behavior. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Schemmel is accused of charging a more than $800 hotel stay in January to his university credit card.
Under oath, the woman, accused of having an affair with Schemmel, said that he went on that trip to Texas to see her and that it wasn’t a business trip.
Schemmel was the athletic director at SDSU for four years, making $250,000 a year. Earlier this year, he signed a contract extension that would have continued until 2013.
SDSU President Stephen Weber says a national search for Schemmel’s replacement will begin immediately, and they’re hoping to have the position filled by March.
