New airline gets ready to take off from Carlsbad

Posted: Updated:

(CBS 8) - A new airline is getting ready to spread its wings at Carlsbad's McClellan-Palomar Airport.

California Pacific Airlines is the brainchild of 89 year-old Ted Vallas. The North County entrepreneur ran Air Resorts Charter Airline for nearly 20 years out of Lindbergh Field airport.

Vallas says he wants to bring a locally-based airline back to San Diego for the first time since Pacific Southwest Airlines ceased operations in 1988.

Vallas says, "We're going to put the smile back in flying. People are going to want to fly again. Even on a short trip to Las Vegas."

California Pacific Airlines, which will fly to other places like Oakland and Phoenix, is expected to take off by the end of the year.
