Luthier’s Co-op first annual guitar/art exhibition

Posted: Updated:

VISTA, Calif. (CBS 8) - In Sue Spray's shop, a co-op of local woodworkers slice, sand, plane and mold the world's most exotic lumber into one-of-a kind guitars.

"We all met in a woodworking course in Palomar College building string instruments, and after we finished with the course, we wanted to continue building," Sue said.

The irony of the story is, "Actually, none of us are players."

Luckily, local recording artist Peter Pupping is. He provides the soundtrack for the story.

"We take all the wood from full-dimensional lumber and slice it down into thin pieces," Sue said. "Then we use very beautiful hardwoods for the back and we add our extra little embellishment to really make them unique and beautiful.

"There's about 300 steps that goes into building each guitar, and it takes anywhere from 100 to 200 hours to build one."

Over the past year and a half, these talented woodworkers have built 18 guitars that they will never play, but they will be putting on display and up for sale on Saturday, May 1 at the E Street Café in Encinitas.

"A portion of the proceeds is going to the Helen Woodward Animal Center," Sue said.

Just know that if you buy one of these beauties, there are some strings attached.

In 2006, the city of San Diego began allowing political campaigns to electronically file their financial reports, giving the public easy access to information on money in city politics. The county of San Diego wasn’t as quick to make the same kind of information available and continues to lag behind the city’s efforts.
