A group of college co-eds living in Mission Beach had a rude awakening at 2 in the morning. They emailed the News 8 CrimeFighters to report burglars tried to break into their apartment.
The streets of Mission Beach are typically pretty quiet during the winter months, but home burglars are still prowling the area at night. A group of college students living in South Mission Beach emailed the News 8 CrimeFighters.
"At 1:45 this morning a person kicked our door in... in what we assume to be an attempted burglary," they wrote.
Other Mission Beach residents have similar stories.
"I've had my house broken into. I wasn't sure who did it... they got money out of my house," one resident said.
"I haven't heard about it, but I worry about it because I leave my place unattended when I'm not here," another resident said.
The News 8 CrimeFighters ran the numbers for home burglaries in Mission Beach over the past three months. Our map shows 24 residential break-ins relatively evenly divided between both north and south Mission Beach areas, all within the past 90 days.
"There's a lot of transient people, for one, down here and the density is high," a resident said.
Police recommend forming a neighborhood watch and reporting suspicious behavior to prevent home burglaries.
"I think with being a homeowner you're safer keeping your outside area lit up really well, and keep your windows locked so you have a better chance," one man said.
