Tip 1 Breaking the Code of Silence

Students:

  • Understand that you're not ratting, you could be saving a friend
  • Talk with parents about threats or rumors
  • Find an adult at school you trust and can confide in
  • Help your school establish a confidential student/parent hot line

Parents:

  • Open lines of communication with your child - be a good listener
  • Acknowledge their feelings, concerns
  • Emphasize and encourage values of leadership and courage - praise their positive acts
  • Help child identify at least one adult they trust and can turn to
  • Become a volunteer as part of your child's school safety programs

Schools:

  • Implement a 24-hour / 7-day-a-week telephone /e-mail hot line where students and parents can report threats
  • Establish protocol for responding to reports of violence
  • Develop programs that emphasize courage, caring and responsibility, make it part of the curriculum
