What a great day for the 2012 Race For The Cure in Balboa Park Sunday morning!
What a great day for the 2012 Race For The Cure in Balboa Park Sunday morning! San Diego has had a very dry atmosphere overhead, so although it warmed up quickly once the sun came out, it wasn't muggy at all.

The 3-Day is coming in November! And for the second time of two this summer, the good folks at New Balance in Cardiff put on a clinic Saturday, July 28, for anyone walking in the 3-Day - followed by a training walk of about 7 miles.

Day 1 is in the books! It was a little over 20 miles, and overall I think my feet are doing okay. We had a great day today, with really a perfect day for walking.

Partly cloudy skies, once again upper 50s and low 60s to get things going, and dry weather off the start line. Another great day for a walk of any length.

Day 3! After 40 miles, it's the last time to get out and see San Diego by foot - the third day of the Komen 3-Day. The journey, for all of us, was about to wind up. Bittersweet, in that the journey to get to where we were this 3rd Day has been amazing and yet is coming to an end. It would be great if this really was the end of the journey for us - but until a cure for cancer is found, it's a journey that will need to be repeated.
The 3-Day is getting closer, and training more furious - and of course the pre-cursor to the 3-Day is the Komen Race For The Cure in Balboa Park.
The 3-Day is getting closer, and training more furious - and of course the pre-cursor to the 3-Day is the Komen Race For The Cure in Balboa Park. That was held this morning. Here at KFMB, we like to greet the walkers, runners, and volunteers early - so when I arrived this morning right at sunrise, you can see a little of the sun's rays already shining on the tops of these clouds.

Along with more than 5,000 other people who have signed up, I'm back for another 60-miles this November in an effort to help find a cure for cancer in our lifetime.

Although it would be raining later, the day started with some sunshine. There were fewer clouds this morning, and it was colder - much colder - but there was some sun and it was another great start to a great day for me and the other 4,000-some walkers on Day 3.

I was ready to go at the start line this morning just before sunrise. It had already been raining to start Day 2, but wasn't too bad at the start. Just some drizzle.

Today there was supposed to have been wet weather, and there certainly was that. I did complete the 19.5 miles today (although many people did not) - and fortunately no blisters yet.

Reading the Komen 3-Day forums, which are available only to participants, I'm finding that everyone's spirits remain high despite the rain in the forecast for Saturday.

Another weekend of long walks, for those training this weekend - and what a great weekend for them. If you're following the training guidelines, logging around 10 miles each day this weekend will have you ready to ROCK on Friday when everything gets underway in Del Mar.

One of the things you'll hear discussed along the course next week, and may have already talked about to friends is why you are doing this walk. Everyone has their own reason.

More than 12,000 showing up for the Race For the Cure! I saw many people I know; many that had stories of breast cancer survivorship (either themselves or those close to them) and many who will be walking with me (and everyone else) in a couple of weeks for the 3-Day.

This week has been downright dangerous for training walks, with upper 90s the past few days - even at the coastline.
This week has been downright dangerous for training walks, with upper 90s the past few days - even at the coastline. But there's a change coming for the weekend, and that will bring temperatures down by 30F degrees or so. Yes, November will be back, just in time for the Balboa Park Race For The Cure.

November is here - and the 3-day is less than three weeks out. But some of the most summerlike weather all year is about to take place around San Diego, so if you've got some long walks planned during the mid-week here, remember to keep hydrated.

If you're following the training schedule that comes from the 3Day.org folks, then this weekend was a big one for you. Possibly the biggest. An 18 mile walk on Saturday, and a 15 mile walk on Sunday. Yikes!

This has been terrific training weather, with the clouds and colder temperatures. For the most part. Expecting the wet weather on Sunday, I changed up my longer walks this weekend to Friday and Saturday, and without the sun blazing down overhead and no 100F degree temps inland, one could not ask for better weather to take a 5-hour walk around the neighborhood.

If you've been following the recommendations for training walks, or if you've walked during the 3-Day in the past, you know that hills are an important part of your training.
If you've been following the recommendations for training walks, or if you've walked during the 3-Day in the past, you know that hills are an important part of your training. One of the hills that seems to be blanketed with a string of pink in November is the Torrey Pines State Park route from the ocean up to the golf course. It's part of the original highway between Los Angeles and San Diego, and this weekend I walked it for the first time.

Tuesday morning is trash day morning in my neighborhood. And when you're out walking for 8 miles (or more, if you're doing a long training walk midweek), you pass a lot of trash cans. It's not about what gets put into them so much, I mean we all throw trash away and know what's in there. But it's how that trash is put in there that really makes trash day one of the worst days ever for a training walk.

. . .and the sounds you'll hear. . .at 6am. So toasty outside today, and this is a big walk weekend (15 miles Saturday, 13 Sunday) I started early.

Perhaps you've heard and seen the same things I have - not just who is and is not a responsible dog owner so early in the morning (although there is that).
I'll say it again, the cool weather this summer has been GREAT for training. Officially, you may be interested to know that this was the coldest summer since 1933.
I'll say it again, the cool weather this summer has been GREAT for training. Officially, you may be interested to know that this was the coldest summer since 1933. During the past 91 days, there were record cold temperatures set along the coast on 54 of those days. . .that's pretty wild.
Weekend plan is for a back-to-back lengthy effort. . .maybe 11 miles Saturday, then 10 miles Sunday.
Weekend plan is for a back-to-back lengthy effort. . .maybe 11 miles Saturday, then 10 miles Sunday. It's August, and the weather is cooperating WONDERFULLY for extending those weekend walks. So far, no blistering (or worse?) - but by Monday I may be telling a different story.
I've tried to be good about exercising in general, but I'm amazed at the weight loss that walking is providing.

This week, hot weather inland will bring temperatures close to 90F in places like Ramona, Tierrasanta, Poway, Eastlake, etc.
This week, hot weather inland will bring temperatures close to 90F in places like Ramona, Tierrasanta, Poway, Eastlake, etc., although there should be a nice marine influence along the coastline where it will still be in the mid 70s (PERFECT for walking). One of the things I had forgotten about since last year's training was walking on Tuesdays.
Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight to end breast cancer! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure® is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days.
