AUBURN, Calif. (AP) - The Auburn City Council is asking state parks officials to crack down on nudity and lewd acts along a remote stretch of the American River.
Council members say the beach has long been a destination for nude sunbathers without a problem. But it's recently become known for sex encounters after it became more accessible to boaters with the opening of a new section of river last year.
Auburn State Recreation Area Superintendent Mike Lynch says park rangers respond to complaints, but only have a few rangers to patrol miles of river. Policing nudity in remote areas is a low priority, and rangers have to witness illegal activity to issue citations.
Council members on Monday unanimously asked for increased enforcement in areas frequented by rafters and boaters.
