Radical Westboro Baptist Church plans protests in San Diego

Posted: Updated:

Members of a controversial Kansas church are turning their sights to San Diego.

The Westboro Baptist Church has announced plans to protest at 30 locations around San Diego County next week.

Its members have been known to protest military funerals, various Christian places of worship, homosexuality and Jewish congregations.

"Groups like this are not even at the margins of American society. They are like, beyond Jupiter," Morris Casuto of the Anti-Defamation League said.

On Oct. 5, this group of extremists heads to San Diego as part of a four-day, 30-location stop, targeting mostly the Jewish community.

"In a way you can say they are a non-discriminatory hater," Casuto said.

Also on the list is the La Costa Resort and Spa, San Diego High School and The Rock Church.

Members of The Rock say they are not ready to comment at this time. The San Diego Unified School District says it will bring in more security if needed.

"What we are recommending, especially in the Jewish community, is to go about your business. Let them have their five minutes then go back to the obscurity they deserve," Casuto said.
