Gusty winds have Cal Fire on high alert

Posted: Updated:

(CNS) - Strong winds are expected across San Diego County today as a cold front bears down on the region, prompting forecasters to warn residents about the possibility of wildfires.

The National Weather Service said wind gusts will reach up to 25 mph in coastal and valley areas by this afternoon, and up to 60 mph in the mountains and deserts. The strong winds are expected to linger into this evening.

With humidity expected to be low, the NWS issued a red flag warning -- indicating conditions that are ripe for wildfires -- for the San Diego County deserts until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A fire weather watch will take effect late tonight and last until Thursday afternoon for coastal areas and inland valleys.

A high wind warning is scheduled to be in effect until 10 tonight in the mountains and deserts of San Diego County. There's also a slight chance of showers today.

The Weather Service said there's a 30 percent of showers in coastal and valley areas, and a 20 percent chance in the mountains. Patchy areas of blowing sand and dust are forecast for the deserts.

Temperatures will drop about 10 to 15 degrees from what they've been over the past few days, according to the Weather Service. Highs are expected to be mostly in the 60s in coastal, valley and mountains areas, and in the high 70s to low 80s in the deserts.
