SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in Santa Cruz County to help communities affected by storms that battered the area in October.
The declaration issued Friday frees up state resources to assist the county. The storms between Oct. 12 and 14 packed high winds and rain and followed wildfires in parts of Santa Cruz over the summer.
They caused flooding and mudslides and led to mandatory evacuations, power outages and more than $1 million of damage to public roads and other infrastructure.
Schwarzenegger said the wildfires had created dangerous conditions and called on state agencies to assist the county in clean up and repairs under the direction of the California Emergency Management Agency.
