SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego man has been arrested on suspicion of choking his 10-week-old puppy nearly to death as punishment for barking and nipping his girlfriend on the nose.
The Department of Animal Services says 50-year-old David Hale Warner was taken into custody early Wednesday at an emergency veterinary clinic where he brought the chocolate Labrador retriever the night before.
Animal services spokesman Dan DeSousa says Warner admitted choking and pinning the dog down for about 20 seconds to "teach it a lesson."
When he was booked, authorities learned Warner was wanted on an outstanding warrant charging him with spousal abuse.
DeSousa says the puppy, Coco, is in intensive care with a guarded prognosis.
