American Airlines flight makes stop in Wyoming

Associated Press - July 12, 2010 6:14 PM ET

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - An American Airlines flight traveling from San Francisco to New York made an emergency stop in Wyoming when the flight crew noticed a smoky odor in the cockpit.

Spokesman Tim Smith says American Flight 24 landed safely at the Casper airport at about 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday, about two hours after taking off from San Francisco.

Smith says contract mechanics examined the plane and found a defective computer display screen in the cockpit. The plane resumed its trip to John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday afternoon without use of the defective screen.

The plane departed Casper for New York at about 3:30 p.m. MDT.

Smith says the Boeing 767-300 aircraft was carrying 193 passengers and nine crew members.
