CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) - President Barack Obama has announced construction of a new $500 million hospital to treat wounded troops and military retirees at Camp Pendleton.
The Navy said Friday the hospital will replace a facility that opened in 1974. The new building, which will also provide services such as maternity and adult intensive care, should be completed in 2013.
The new hospital adds to a massive, $2 billion rebuilding project taking place throughout the 250-square-mile Camp Pendleton, between San Diego and Los Angeles, home to more than 40,000 Marine and sailors.
The money will come from the federal stimulus package signed by Obama. The package also calls for $621 million for a new hospital at the Army's Fort Hood in Texas.
