Fire Causes Extensive Damage in Packed San Carlos Home

Posted: Updated:

A fire of unknown origin tore through a San Carlos home Monday, causing extensive damage before crews could subdue the intense flames.  It took nearly five hours to out the fire.

No one was in the house in the 6600 block of Casselberry Way when the blaze erupted shortly after 5 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Adding to the difficulty of dousing the flames was the fact that the occupants had "a lot of items stacked up" inside, crowding rooms and blocking doorways, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque told News 8.

Those piles of possessions, which provided ample fuel for the fire, were sure to be "smoldering for a long, long time," Luque said.  The home also had a shingle roof that was covered with a secondary metal layer.  Firefighters had to pull off the metal roof in order to gain access to the burning wood shingles.

The blaze sent thick clouds of mostly white smoke high into the air for over an hour as crews continued to pour water onto the charred home with fire hoses and a several-story-tall, 500-gallon-per-minute "ladder pipe," according to Luque.

No injuries were reported.
