The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted today to restore a beach water quality testing program, for which state funding was vetoed by the governor.
Supervisor Greg Cox said he expects the state funding to eventually be restored, so the $150,000 being spent by the county will be paid back.
The supervisors have been vocal in their opposition to what they call "backfilling" funds that have been taken away by the state.
Thousands of people visit the San Diego area each year because of its beaches, and testing the water has "become a de-facto core service of the county," making it necessary to restore the testing program by summer, Cox said.
The governor made the line-item veto of state funding last September. Since then, California officials have gone back and forth on whether to release water quality bond money for the testing.
