Police reported that a 21-year-old man speeding in a Toyota Camry crashed into a telephone pole in the Clairemont neighborhood Saturday, killing himself and a passenger.

The Medical Examiner's Office has identified the passenger as 19-year-old Paul Albert Alferos, Jr. Some news agencies, including the San Diego Union-Tribune, have reported that the driver was Alferos' brother, but he has not been publicly identified.

The wreck was at 2929 Clairemont Drive at roughly 2:30 a.m., and broke the pole in two, San Diego police Sgt. Alan Hayward said.

The Toyota was headed south when the driver lost control, he said.

Arriving officers found the passenger in the backseat and declared him dead on the spot, Hayward said. The driver died later at a hospital, he said.
