San Diego Investigator Charged With Witness Tampering

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A high-ranking investigator with the San Diego County public defender's office has been charged with hiding a witness to her son's domestic violence case.

The sheriff's office said Monday that Karen Cabrera was arrested last week and charged with witness tampering.

An arrest warrant details Cabrera's alleged involvement in the case filed against her son, who was charged in June with burning is girlfriend with a hair iron.

The girlfriend failed to appear at preliminary hearing in early September, and investigators say they later discovered that Cabrera sent her on a flight to Acapulco, Mexico.

The girlfriend appeared in Superior Court the next month, one week after Cabrera's son pleaded guilty.

Cabrera did not return a phone message left at her office Monday. Prosecutors and the public defender's office declined comment.
