Man Accused Of Stabbing Stranger Outside Hallmark Pleads Not Guilty

Posted: Updated:

An ex-con accused of fatally stabbing a Northern California tourist in the parking lot of an Oceanside shopping center last week pleaded not guilty today to a murder charge.

Eric Russell Andreasen, 37, was ordered held without bail in the death of 54-year-old Katherine Parker.

Police said the attack at the El Camino North Shopping Center last Friday afternoon was apparently random, as robbery didn't appear to be the motive.

The victim -- from the city of Lincoln, near Sacramento -- had been visiting family in North County with her husband, who was not with her when she was stabbed with a large kitchen knife as she walked to her car in the parking lot.

Andreasen faces 51 years to life in state prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Roy Lai.

The defendant pleaded guilty to attempted grand theft in 2005 and was sentenced to 16 months in prison, and also has a robbery conviction dating back to 1991, the prosecutor said.

Vista Judge Marshall Hockett scheduled a readiness conference for April 17 and a preliminary hearing for April 21.
