The family of a North County couple still has no idea what happened to cause their minivan to plunge into San Diego Bay Monday night.

Bob Johnson died after his van plunged into the bay near Harbor Island. His wife Maggie is still in critical condition at UCSD Medical Center. Both were pulled from the chilly waters in a desperate attempt to save them.

Maggie Johnson, 57, was at the wheel at the time of the accident. Bob Johnson, 62, and his wife were heading home to Vista from the Sheraton Hotel after visiting Bob's daughter, son-in-law and two-year-old grandson visiting from Seattle.

According to police, the driver failed to make a turn at an intersection.

When emergency crews rescued the couple, both were unconscious and neither was breathing.

Bob Johnson died from his injuries Thursday night.

According to family members, Bob Johnson had been struggling with Parkinson's disease.
