A family friend confirmed that longtime Poway Mayor Mickey Cafagna died Saturday from complications related to his long battle with kidney cancer. He was 65.

Cafagna died at 2 a.m. at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, said Kathy Mechling, a family friend who was answering calls at Cafagna's home.

The San Diego Union-Tribune previously reported that Cafagna checked into the hospital March 5 for what was initially diagnosed as pneumonia, but what doctors later determined was septic shock.

According to the newspaper, Cafagna battled kidney cancer for four years and it had metastasized to his lungs.

Cafagna served on the Poway City Council since 1992. In 1998, he was elected mayor. His third four-year term was to expire in November 2010.

Since 1974, Cafagna owned Square One Inc., a real estate business based  in La Jolla.

He is survived by his wife Sharon, two children, Stacey Pollard and Kevin Cofagna, and five grandchildren.

The family is working on funeral arrangements, Mechling said.
