Woman Reportedly Jumps Into Polar Bear Enclosure

Posted: Updated:
BERLIN (AP) - Officials at Berlin's zoo say their polar bear enclosure is "already safe" and they're planning no more security measures despite a zoo visitor's swan dive into the moat surrounding it.

The woman scrambled over a fence, a hedge of thorns and a concrete wall before jumping into the murky moat to swim with the bears on Friday. One of the bears then bit the woman's arms, legs and back before zoo keepers managed to fish the woman out with a life preserver.

The German newspaper Bild reports that the woman is still recovering in hospital.

The incident was caught on amateur video and has had German tabloids abuzz with speculation about the woman's motive.

Last year, a man hurdled a moat at the same zoo to get closer to the celebrity polar bear Knut, later explaining that Knut had looked "lonely." He escaped unharmed when keepers lured Knut away with a leg of beef.

The zoo says it will continue to rely on the common sense of visitors to ensure safety.
