Quash: Alzheimer's Association Fundraiser This Saturday

Posted: Updated:

The baby boomers are hitting retirement age, and as their age goes up, so will the number of those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. That means a whole new generation of caregivers will need knowledge and support, and the Alzheimer's Association is holding a fun event this weekend to do just that.

Brandy Modic's grandmother died from Alzheimer's just last fall. The irony - it happened on the same day of the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk, a fundraiser she participates in on behalf of her husband's grandmother, who died from Alzheimer's four years prior.

"They're the storytellers, you know. So she would really love to tell stories so we would sit there all day long, about where they would vacation to," Brandy said.

Now left with only the pictures and memories of two grandmothers, Brandy's taking action to get the word out to her peers abut Alzheimer's devastating effects.

"I think the more people that know about it, the more that will get involved, the more money we can raise. And hopefully by the time we get up there, you know, find a cure," Brandy said.

To that end, Brandy's helping to organize and participate in Quash, the quest to unravel Alzheimer's scavenger hunt aimed at young adults 18 to 34. Teams of two to four will race around downtown this coming Saturday in this fun-filled fundraiser.

Brandy hopes that raising money and spreading knowledge will help the next generation of caregivers get ready for what's coming. Brandy says for her parents and in-laws, dealing with Alzheimer's was very difficult because of the unknown.

"I think it was hard because they didn't really know what to do. You don't really understand this illness until your family is affected by it," she said.
