Authorities said an Oregon man was killed when his all-terrain vehicle crashed over an embankment while he tried to pull over to make a cell phone call.

Scott Allen Wolverton, 31, was driving a 2004 Polaris Ranger, a two passenger off-road vehicle, west on private Eagle Gap road off Mesa Grande Road, near state Route 76 when he "failed to negotiate a curve." The man drove over the edge of the road and overturned the vehicle, which landed on top of him, said a California Highway Patrol dispatcher.

Officers at the scene said the resident of Albany, Ore. was driving late at night in the mountainous area to seek a place where he could get a cell phone signal.

The crash was reported at 11 p.m. Friday when a passerby spotted the ATV, according to a CHP dispatcher.

Wolverton, who was in San Diego County to train hunting dogs, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

The crash happened off state Route 76 between Ramona and Julian, near the crossroads town of Santa Ysabel.
