Hundreds Of Sharks Gather At La Jolla Shores

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The heat is sticking around for another day after breaking records across the county and sending thousands of San Diegans to the beach. But the warm weather also means it's a perfect day to head to La Jolla Shores, where leopard sharks are back, giving swimmers a thrill.

For those who made their way to La Jolla Shores, the ocean offered up more than just a way to cool down. It's part of what drew beachgoers John and Dorothy down to the water.

"We heard that there are a lot of leopard sharks, which we're very excited to see," Dorothy said.

Typically leopard sharks in such a large number would show up later in the season.

"We know it was really hot yesterday. The top part of the water column could have been warmer, so maybe that drew them in, because it was warmer. Another reason is because of the Santa Anas it's a lot calmer right now, so we may just be able to see them better," Scripps PhD student Andrew Nolsa said.
