Our First Look At The Newest Hybrid Car

Posted: Updated:

Ford is giving us our first look at its newest hybrid car. The 2010 Fusion hybrid promises to drive home fuel economy.

Ford is actually the only car maker of the big three that declined to take any federal bailout money. Now with the release of the 2010 Fusion hybrid - named the most fuel-efficient midsize car in North America - Ford says it's continuing to stand apart from the pack.

The 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid fuses together safety features and fuel efficiency, according to its engineers.

"It's a non-compromise vehicle. You get all the benefits of a mid-size vehicle - safety, creature comforts, and to top it off, great fuel economy, 41 miles per gallon in the city," hybrid program leader Praveen Cherian said.

It also gets 36 miles per gallon on the highway. Kelley Blue Book online names it one of the Top 10 Green Cars, while the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety give the 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid a Top Safety Pick rating.

Special features abound, like radar sensors that alert drivers not only if there's an obstacle behind them, but the radar also comes with radar equipped to look sideways 60 feet on both sides to see if they have any cross-traffic coming in.

It also has blind spot monitoring - an LED light appearing in the outside mirror if there's a vehicle on either side the driver can't see.

"So it really helps you with driving and making sure you're not driving into somebody in your blind spot," Cherian said.

Behind the wheel, the 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid also offers a "smart gauge," helping hybrid drivers get the most mileage for their money.

"So as you are driving, it gives you some amount of coaching that can help you maximize your fuel economy," Cherian explained.

So how much will this set you back? The 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid is priced at just about $27,200 and comes standard with some of the mentioned features. Also, keep in mind there is a $1,700 tax credit from now through September.
