8's Cool School: Cubberly Elementary

Posted: Updated:

This year marks a milestone for Cubberly Elementary in Serra Mesa. The school is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Teachers, students and parents are taking pride in the school's history, along with its commitment to the arts.

With a dab of innate creativity and help from parent volunteers, students at Cubberly Elementary are expressing their artistic abilities. Art Corps is a comprehensive fine arts curriculum taught by parent volunteers.

"The parents actually have outside person who comes in to train them, to teach classes for every classroom here at the school," principal Rosemary Cruz said.

Parent volunteers like Maria Edwards introduce artistic concepts like shapes, color and texture.

"It's fun - they love to draw, they love to paint, they love texture, they love playing with all the different mediums we use," Edwards said.

Children are encouraged to experiment, take chances and express their own creative ideas.

" I like coloring and painting," student Zander said.

Classroom teachers are expressing themselves as well, but it's the students' work that's capturing everyone's attention.

"Oh my gosh I see things kids do...things I never thought they could do," a teacher said.

According to educators, the program costs nearly $800 per year and is completely funded by the PTA. It's a precious gift during these tough economic times.

"It takes a lot to run a school and to be able to provide the extras the kids need. They not only need academics, but they also need the arts in the school, so this was a way that we could have a program that meets the needs of every child and gets to every child in the school," Cruz said.

Congratulations to Cubberly Elementary School, 8's Cool School of the Week.
