Chargers Welcome English, Pick 7 More on Day 2 of NFL Draft

Posted: Updated:

Chargers officials took time out on Day 2 of the NFL draft to welcome their first-round draft pick to Chargers Park.

Linebacker Larry English met with coaches and front office personnel before being presented with a new jersey.

English, drafted from Northern Illinois University, said he is thrilled to be on a team that has legitimate Super Bowl aspirations and could not wait to play alongside Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips.

The Chargers had a total of seven picks on Day 2. They took offensive linemen in the third and fourth rounds and a defensive lineman.

The Chargers also selected Colorado State running back Gatrell Johnson in the fourth round.

In the fifth round, they selected Oregon State defensive back Brandon Hughes, and took USC safety Kevin Ellison in the sixth round.

The Chargers completed their draft picks with LSU receiver Demetrius Byrd, who was critically injured in a car accident last Sunday. His condition has been upgraded to good, and doctors expect a full recovery.
