Chargers Linebacker Charged in Downtown Bar Fight

Posted: Updated:
Authorities said Shaun Phillips is facing misdemeanor battery charges Tuesday for allegedly hitting a security guard at a downtown San Diego bar.

Phillips was cited and released early Saturday morning following the incident at the Ivy Hotel on F Street, according to San Diego police.

In a written report on the incident, police said the security guard was hit in the left side of his face by Phillips' right hand while breaking up a brawl at the hotel's rooftop bar.

Police spokeswoman Monica Munoz told The San Diego Union-Tribune that neither Phillips nor any other Charger was involved in the brawl, but why Phillips would have wanted to strike the guard was not immediately clear.

Earlier this month, another security guard at the Stingaree nightclub on Sixth Avenue accused Phillips of assault but the linebacker was not arrested or cited in that incident, police said.

Phillips said both incidents were "misunderstandings," according to the Union-Tribune.

In a statement, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said Monday: "It's disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shaun Phillips. We'll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course."
