Crews Rescue 2 Men From Scaffolding Outside Downtown High-Rise

Posted: Updated:

Two window washers found themselves precariously suspended about 100 feet above downtown San Diego today after the rigging on their scaffolding failed.

The accident at the intersection of West Broadway and Kettner Boulevard occurred about 1:30 p.m., leaving the platform hanging vertically against the high-rise office building on which the men were working, according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

It was not immediately clear if the window washers, who were strapped onto the scaffolding, suffered any significant injuries when the platform gave way about 10 stories above street level, a dispatcher said.

Firefighters soon decided to break out a window to get to the victims and did so after everyone had been cleared off the street below.

Crews had the window washers safely inside the building shortly after 2 p.m. and were evaluating their conditions.
