Single-Engine Plane Makes Hard Landing at Gillespie Field

Posted: Updated:
City officials said a single-engine experimental aircraft landed hard and skidded off a runway at Gillespie Field Sunday, but the pilot and sole occupant was unhurt.

The plane was coming in to land around 10:15 a.m. on an east-west runway when it hit hard and went into a nose-down position, the city's Monica Zech said.

The craft ended up in a ditch between two parallel runways, Zech said.

She said El Cajon firefighters arrived to find the pilot standing next to the plane and saying he was okay.

There was no fuel spill associated with the incident, she said.

The FAA gives experimental licenses to airplanes that are either prototypes or planes built from kits or blueprints by pilots. Officials did not have details available about the make or genesis of the plane that crunched Sunday.
