AFSCME Workers Protest 6 Percent Pay Cut

Posted: Updated:
Some city workers are protesting a potential pay cut as the city council is scheduled to vote on it Tuesday.

The San Diego City Council is expected to finalize a vote that would force members of AFSCME Local 127 to take a 6 percent pay cut.

Union officials say members are agreeing to cuts in retirement contributions, pension benefits and health care, but cannot afford cuts in their take-home pay.

"We are willing to do our part," said Joan Raymond, union president. "We've more than done our part in past years. We are the lowest paid workers, so a six percent cut for our workers is the difference between putting the groceries on the table or not."

Mayor Jerry Sanders has also agreed to a 6 percent cut in his salary. He says it is only fair that all city employees take equal cuts in pay.
