Police Catch ATM Thieves When Their Getaway Truck Crashes

Posted: Updated:
Authorities said two men who hoisted an automatic teller machine into their pickup truck crashed into a pole during a police pursuit and were arrested Sunday.

The two men first broke into the Rancho Bernardo Car Wash at 16757 Bernardo Center Dr. about 4:15 a.m., unsuccessfully tried to steal the ATM there and left with stolen cigarettes and beer, said San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick.

About 50 minutes later, they broke into the Unocal station at 3766 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and loaded an ATM into their pickup truck there, said Battrick.

A caller reported the crime in progress and a patrol officer spotted the suspect's truck and tried to stop it, Battrick said.

As the suspects sped away, they hit a pole at the Best Western at 2575 Clairemont Dr. and ran off, but were arrested shortly after, the sergeant said.

No one was injured in the incident, Battrick said.
