Poway School Board Cuts 120 Teachers; Remaining Teachers Take Pay Cut

Posted: Updated:

Schools across the country have been making budget cuts, costing workers their jobs. The latest to do so is the Poway Unified School District.

Cutbacks in the Poway Unified School District will cost hundreds of workers their jobs, and those who get to keep their jobs have to pay ap price.

A special session of the Poway school board was held Monday, at which it was decided 120 classroom teachers and dozens of other certificated positions will be cut.

Teachers and parents pleaded with board officials to let staffers keep their hobs so students wouldn't suffer. The school board said, however, that they had no other choice.

More than 190 teachers received preliminary layoff notices, but only 120 will be laid off. Another 59 classified positions will receive final notices in the near future.

Teachers who are staying agreed to take a 2.7 percent salary rollback, helping finalize the layoffs that have haunted the district for weeks.

The classified positions being cut include special education, food and nutrition, extended services and preschool positions, all of which are paid through grants and special funding.
