Burgess Gets 5 Years for Disappearance, Death of SDSU Student

Posted: Updated:

A convicted sex offender who gave a San Diego State University drugs and dumped her body in the ocean after she overdosed has been sentenced to five years in prison.

A Los Angeles judge sentenced John Steven Burgess on Monday. He had pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor concealing an accidental death.

Burgess has admitted he met 19-year-old San Diego State University student Donna Jou of Rancho Santa Margarita through an ad on the Web site Craigslist.org and gave her drugs.

When Burgess entered his plea, he described how he gave Jou cocaine and heroin on June 23, 2007.

He said he then found her dead and took her body to sea in his sailboat.
