Benjamin Domenico Saavedra of San Diego was drunk when officers arrived to arrest him at the Grossmont Trolley Station, 8601 Fletcher Parkway, around 10:20 p.m. Thursday, said La Mesa police Sgt. Bret Richards.
Saavedra was riding the trolley westbound from the Amaya Trolley Station when he grabbed a 62-year-old woman by the throat and pinned her against the interior wall of the trolley, Richards said.
Once he had her pinned, Saavedra grabbed the woman's necklace until it broke and fled the trolley at the Grossmont stop with the necklace, according to Richards.
Trolley security officers caught Saavedra and held him until La Mesa police arrived, he said.
Saavedra was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of strong arm robbery. No injuries reported.
