Court Will Decide if Seals Get to Stay at Children's Pool

Posted: Updated:
A territorial battle between the city and the seals at the Children's Pool in La Jolla Cove is now before the courts.

On Wednesday, a judge will decide if a colony of roughly 200 seals will get to continue to stay at the Children's Pool.

The city is planning to restore the beach back to its condition before the seals arrived through a method called bio-acoustics. The method is designed to disperse the seals by replicating the sound of a dog's bark.

The city is following a Superior Court order to reduce the bacterial contamination at the Children's Pool, so it could become a swimming area again.

The cost of the dispersal of the seals, according to city officials, is estimated to be almost $700,000 a year.
