Schwarzenegger Details $5.5B More Cuts To Budget

Posted: Updated:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing $5.5 billion more cuts to close a $21.3 billion deficit in California.

The Republican governor proposed Tuesday to eliminate welfare checks for more than 500,000 low-income families, cutting health coverage for nearly 1 million children and phasing out college assistance for thousands of students.

Schwarzenegger also proposes eliminating funding for state parks, reducing inmate rehabilitation programs and slashing funding for courts.

The administration released details of the deeper cuts after California voters defeated special election ballot measures last week. The cuts come on top of those he previously announced.
