Mayor Sanders Tells State to Keep Hands Off SD Property Tax Money

More than 200 state parks around California could become the latest victims of budget cuts.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed closing 220 parks to save money. Those include Anza-Borrego and Torrey Pines in the San Diego County.

Other popular sites include the Will Rogers Ranch near Los Angeles and Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe.

The governor said the state would save $70 million through next June by closing the parks.

Lawmakers are currently facing a budget deficit of more than $24 million.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is taking a stand, slamming the state legislature for wanting to dip into local property taxes to balance the budget deficit.

He was joined Thursday by other California mayors to denounce the idea.

Mayor Sanders says if the state goes through with the proposal, San Diego would have to make cuts in public safety.
