The six dozen nonprofit arts and culture organizations that receive funding from the city had a $180 million direct impact on San Diego's economy last year, according to a report released today.

Those same arts and culture organizations also attracted 1.6 million people to the region, who spent $394 million, according to a report from the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.

"As these figures attest, arts and culture (is) good for business in San Diego," Mayor Jerry Sanders said at the Old Globe Theatre's Tech Center in downtown.

According to the report, there were 72 arts and culture organizations that shared in $6.4 million in funding from the commission. The money comes from hotel tax revenues.
