World Ocean Day: Celebrate San Diego's Wet & Wild Backyard
Here in San Diego the ocean is our backyard, our playground and one of our greatest resources. Local water lovers can join a worldwide celebration of the sea with some local events happening all over San Diego this weekend.
The United Nations officially declared June 7 as World Oceans Day. It provides an opportunity each year to celebrate our personal connection to the sea.
Birch Aquarium at Scripps will mark World Ocean Day with special activities to honor the ocean and raise awareness about the need to protect it.
"Don't throw trash out of the window, don't throw plastic bags into the ocean. Be very careful and recycle wherever you can. Put trash in its proper place. Those things can make a big difference to the health of our oceans," Birch Aquarium Executive Director Nigella Hillgarth said.
Birch Aquarium visitors can play educational games and discover how Scripps researchers are studying the ocean. If you get inspired, you can help in a beach or an on-the-water kayak cleanup at La Jolla Shores this Sunday.
