Basing Ospreys In San Diego Under Consideration

Posted: Updated:
The Navy wants your opinion on bringing MV-22 Ospreys to San Diego.

Concerns about traffic, noise or air pollution were addressed during a public meeting at Clairemont High Thursday night.

The Navy wants to bring 10 squadrons of the half helicopter, half plane to Camp Pendleton or MCAS Miramar by next year. There will be about 10 to 15 ospreys per squadron.

The Navy says the move will help the Marine Corps modernize its missions in the war zone.

"It's the future of the Marine Corps aviation. It's gonna replace the older Vietnam Sea Knight helicopters that have been with us since the 60s," said Major Steve Christman with the U.S. Marine Corps.

The osprey program was nearly scrapped because of two test crashes that killed 23 marines in 2000.
