Search For Suspect Shuts Down I-805 In National City

Posted: Updated:

A man who was a passenger in a car being chased by police through the South Bay today fled on foot at the end of the pursuit, running into a heavily overgrown riverbed and remaining at large for hours as authorities searched the area by ground and air.

The driver of the vehicle refused to yield when a police officer tried to pull him over on East Palomar Street in Chula Vista about 3 p.m., CVPD spokesman Bernard Gonzales said.

The reason for the traffic stop was not immediately confirmed, though a dispatcher said it apparently had to do with a narcotics trafficking investigation.

The motorist fled to north on Interstate for several miles, then exited at Bonita Road and pulled over near Plaza Bonita mall, where a passenger jumped out and ran off into the nearby river channel.

Officers arrived moments later, took the driver into custody and confiscated a gun from him, Gonzales said. They also found several other firearms inside the car.

Police from Chula Vista, San Diego and National City, meanwhile, surrounded the foliage-choked riverbed and began searching it with service dogs, aided by an SDPD helicopter crew.

The man was still at large in the late afternoon, Gonzales said.

During the search, squad cars blocked part of the right-hand lane of I-805 and a nearby onramp, adding to rush-hour congestion in the hearily traveled area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
