Ray Charles' Foundation Gets Rights To His Name

Posted: Updated:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A federal court has ruled that the Ray Charles Foundation holds the rights to the legendary singer's name, likeness and intellectual property.

The charitable foundation announced Tuesday that a District Court judge in Los Angeles awarded it about $8,900 in compensatory damages and attorney's fees on May 28.

Several of Charles' 12 children filed suit against the foundation, Ray Charles Enterprises and Joe Adams, Charles' manager from 1961 until his death, alleging they were excluded from business dealings after the musician died in 2004.

The foundation countersued and the judge ruled in its favor, barring Charles' children and their attorney from using Charles' likeness or name.
