Police Capt. Jim Collins says the chase began when a pedestrian was robbed Wednesday night and police in the area noticed a van driving erratically.
Collins say the officers followed and the van soon stopped. A man got out and fired shots that pierced the patrol car's windshield but hit no one. Collins says officers then fired back, hitting the man in the stomach, and the man got back in the van.
The chase continued until the van hit a guardrail under Interstate 805. Three men and two women, all in their early 20s, were arrested.
The injured suspect was taken to a hospital. His condition was described only as stable.
